So when Sonia of SGA Events wrote me an email asking me if I would like to participate in the ultimate Marie Antoinette inspired wedding photo shoot for the launch of her services in France… I did not hesitate to say OUI! Prance around a castle in a gorgeous gown for a day!?! Sign me up!   (scroll down for the interview in English)
SGA events invite
Well, I recieved an email back in the beginning of September, from Sonia asking me if I wanted to participate in the ‘ultimate Marie Antoinette inspired photo-shoot’. How could a girl say no to that! Preparations and emails flew back and forth for over a month. I went to two dress fittings. The first one was at a costume designer’s workshop and the dress was an 18th century styled gown that although well made and lovely, it squeezed the hell out of my ribcage as it came with a real corset! Frankly it was hard to breath and I realized why women used to faint all the time back then. I was relieved when Sonia asked me to go elsewhere for a second dress fitting, at Métal Flaque, where I tried on the Vera Wang design that was worn in the movie Bride Wars by Kate Hudson. OH MY GOD I have never seen so much tulle!
The day of the shoot, Sonia Picked me up and we drove out to the countryside where the Castle Dangu lay waiting for us to fill it with fun and fluff! Laetitia the hair and make-up expert went to work on me immediately and her nimble hands turned me into a princess in just about 2 hours. And then, for the next several hours I skipped around the castle in that incredible gown, sighing, posing, smiling, eating sweets, turning my head this way and that, winking and twirling… in front of two rapidly clicking cameras. It doesn’t got more fun, nor more girly than that! I was on a little princess cloud all day. It’s not often I get primped up and fussed over like that. Frankly I wasn’t ready for it to end when at 3pm we started packing up the shoot. But I have such lovely photos to remind me and have made fabulous friends of all of the amazing people who worked on the shoot. I am thrilled to say that Laetitia is going to be doing my hair and make up at my own wedding next summer, and Frédérique who took care of the decorations is helping me with ideas and inspiration as well, for our circus themed event.
I am sending out my heart felt thanks to Sonia for having to confidence to give me this role and to everyone who worked on the shoot, for all the fun and wonderful attitudes that make doing such a project even more of a joy.
And now for my interview with Sonia… (see below)

Sonia Akono - SGA Events

Quand tu étais petite, comment imaginais-tu ta vie d’adulte?

ENGLISH VERSION!

Interview with a romantic…

How did the aquired art of wedding planning come about? And how did you get into it?
I thought for a long time that my interest in design should remain a hobby. I studied language and business at Oxford Brooks University and then I spent five years working as a credit manager. But I always sustained my creative passion and took courses at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, which permitted me to develope an eye for art and design.
While I was preparing my own wedding, I wanted “something different”. I had deeply explored the works of designers such as Preston Baileys, Mindy Weiss, Martha Stewart… and I was struck by their innate creativity. I was disappoinnted to discover that in Europe we are missing this kind of innovative spirit and the grandeur of the American style. So I took courses for wedding planning at the Insititute of professional wedding planners in England with the objective of creating my own enterprise that would put an emphasis on creativity.
I believe I have the job of a lifetime. And the cherry on top is to be able to participate in the creation of weddings that challenge me more and more artistically.

When you were little, how did you imagine your life as an adult?

As a child I only dreamed of finding my prinnce charming and of having a large family. And I saw myself as an entrepreneur.
What is the moment in your work that you enjoy the most? What is it that makes you say “This is why I do this job!” ?
The moment of my work that pleases me the most is the moment when the bride and groom discover their reception hall for the first time. to be able to create their vision is extremely gratifying. I do this work for the priviledge of being an active member in the creation of a precious moment of a marriage. For the pleasure of accompanying, supportinng and creating the dream of two people who love eachother.
Describe an unforgettable instant.
As a wedding planner, an unforgettable instant was when a preist informs a couple the day before their wedding that he will not be able to perform his services the next day. To be able to find the priest at his own home and convince him to bless the union of a catholic couple is the most unforgettable moment so far!
What are your projects for the future?
SGA Events is just under one year old and there is still so much to do! My future endeavors are to grow my business and offer more personalized services that are designed to facilitate the organisation of a wedding. I am going ot be organizinng weddings in France for an Anglophone clientel in search of French charm. I would also like to seduce a French clientel in search of a more original approach to their events.

Bises…

Paris Wedding Wednesday : Join the Circus!!

It absolutely tickles me to compare a wedding to a circus…because, I mean really, who are we kidding! A wedding is a beautiful event, of course, but preparing it, and trying to appease everyone’s desires and calm the emotions of the drama queens, well… I am sure wedding planner Kim Petyt knows something of THAT! It is, essentially, a circus with a white dress and a few “lions” that could need to be tamed (some may refer to them as family or in-laws…) 😉

I for one do not insist on taking myself too seriously, even when it comes to such a serious event. This doesn’t mean I will mock the sacre of marriage, believe me, I adhere to it’s seriousness with a big beating heart! That’s what the ceremony is for. ….BUT! the whole idea of the reception to me should be done in gaïté and grand amusement. So along with all the drama and excitement that a wedding brings, I do believe that CIRCUS is a fitting comparison!

So, if I were to have a circus themed wedding…

The invitations would be vintage-type circus tickets, like this :

Paris Wedding Wednesday : The Photographer

So I wanted to share with all of you, my fabulous “find” if I can call her that : Elisabeth Perotin.

She has been a photographer for five years, ans started doing wedding photography two years ago. It was when looking for someone to capture her own wedding that she fell under the charm of the American type of wedding photography such as Simply Bloom Photography, or Melissa Johnston and Elisabeth decided to focus on this photography path. Those photographers that inspire her  with a “lifestyle” type of artistry seem to have a much more natural and artistic vision that Elisabeth is drawn to. Another of her great inspirations is the cinematic works of Sophia Coppola, who before becoming a cinematographer, was herself a photographer and this still comes through in her films by the way she frames and uses light. The Virgin Suicides is one of Elisabeth’s most important inspirations from Coppola, with it’s soft powdered colors and retro ambiance.

I found Elisabeth one day a couple months ago when I was browsing the wedding blogs, and looking for inspiration for my dress. I saw an ad on someone’s page, I don’t remember who’s, and I clicked on it. Not being someone who feels the need to have the official family album style wedding pictures, but rather something that’s more tailored to who Chéri and I are as people, I was immediately drawn into her pictures and browsed every single one that she has posted on her site. Those photos seem to communicate so much joy and happiness, so much love, that I knew I had found THE person to capture our wedding. She has a way of bringing out out the personalities through her work coupled with a soft romanticism that I found entirely delightful.

She’s from Reims, France, but let me know when she would be in Paris, and we met with Chéri at my favorite cake shop : Sugarplum Cake Shop of course, and Elisabeth knew about it. It was her suggestion. I liked her even more after hearing that! We spend aver an hour and a half looking at examples of her work, eating cake and chatting about weddings. And Chéri LOVED her work! Win! She has a natural ease about her, that makes you feel like you are meeting with a friend, in whom you can confide and truts with the special task that she so gently takes on. A very talented and down to earth woman, I am happy to say she will be immortalizing our wedding!

Elisabeth told me that she would love to have a wedding to shoot in the USA, a place that she has been to on several occasions and has a not-so-secret passion for, but has yet to shoot a wedding there. I am sure her imagination would be able to capture romantic moments from the lighthouse beaches of Cape Cod to green grass back yards of Georgia to the great landscapes of Montana… anywhere. She has an eye for the details, the ones that matter, the ones that together, build a life.

Coupe d’été : Row Boat Regatta n° II

The second annual Row Boat Regatta hosted by Prête-Moi Paris almost didn’t happen.

P1100285

Originally scheduled for June 18th, I began scrutinizing the weather forecasts a week and a half before that date. None of them looked positive. Thundershowers. Not good weather to paddle around on the lake under! The day before, the weather forecast was so disheartening that I canceled the regatta and rescheduled. When I woke the next morning and looked out the window I saw bright sun streaming through the clouds. I shook my fist and cursed the sky to pour down rain. It did eventually that afternoon, in violent bursts with strong gusts of wind, so I felt quite validated in canceling the regatta.

The rain date came around and the same anxiety over the weather came over my head like a little pooh-bear rain cloud the week before. And some weather reports predicted rain, others did not. I said to hell with it, I’ll be there rain or shine! And if no one else shows up, I’ll have a bottle of rosé champagne to pop and I will serve myself glass after glass of champagne in a rain filled row boat if I have to! (Very dramatic, I know… It’s all part of the rough life I live as an expat blogger in Paris). 😉

Well the day came and the contestants showed. A small crowd of ten, we  claimed our picnic spot on the island, and the rowers set about figuring out how to man the oars. Sab, from the meet up group Paris if You Please who helped me organize the event, came with his lovely wife and adorably squish-able son. Other contestants, Satyam and Linda tried the strategy of let the others drink a few glasses of wine first in order to gain advantage over what they hoped would be some pretty swerving rowing… Steve’s strategy was to have a past career as a professional rower, that helps a lot. Estela and Sly played it cool and cute, pretending they were there only for the romantic aspect (being the newly weds that they are). In the end Steve’s boat won and they shared their champagne all around!

And not a drop of rain fell the entire time!!!

Cheers to all who joined in the fun and see you next year!

The beauty of Fall – Bel automne

I need a breather from my blogging rants… to remind myself (and you) that there are still  beautiful things in life like Fall, and Parisian gardens.

Enjoy…

I get by with a little Yelp from my friends!

So our friends at Yelp have decided that they really want to see us make silly fools of ourselves and are teaming up with Prête-Moi Paris! to recruit more votes for the race in high heels! La Course en escarpins with Sarenza. Check out the Yelp Paris newsletter that comes out today! (If you don’t speak french and you can’t understand the Sarenza website, I have a previous blog post in English to help you vote for us!) … (oh and…Learn to speak French confidently at http://www.accredited-online-colleges.org)

For the race : We need to be in 1st place in order to get a garunteed spot! Aaah! If not, we get thrown in a hat with the rest of the teams (like some who only have one or two vote…a lot of work they’re doing! Ppssshhht!) and then they will draw out 16 teams only. There’s a lot more than 16 teams signed up. 😦

But, enough about the race (oh and please go vote for us now, merci!)… Yelp, is a website that helps you find things…. no, not your long lost high school crush (that’s what facebook is for) nor your lost kitty (that’s what twitter is for)… but fun and useful and practical things like, a good market, or shoe shop, or bakery, or pharmacy etc. And each place is reviewed by locals. You may yourself also review places if you like. So join me on Yelp Paris and let’s share some of our favorite places to go to!

Mobile people check out the Yelp phone apps for phones like iphone & androids on your application marketplace.

à plus!

Mid-November UPDATE :

We did not get enough votes for the top spot, nor did we get selected in the random drawing for the other spots.

I guess I will just be running in heels to catch the bus!

XOXOXO

Joyeux anniversaire à moi! – Happy birthday to me!

Prête-Moi Paris is one year old today!

Oh calou callay, oh fraptious day!

I am so excited that I am celebrating by, by, byyyy going to work…. and uuuuuuh, having pasta with tomato sauce for lunch, aaaaaaand visiting someone in the hospital this evening.

🙂

Well, I can’t drink bubbly, prance around Paris and eat macarons EVERY day now can I!?!

Maybe I will try to celebrate somehow this weekend… but I don’t want to do something boring and traditional. I need some suggestions from my readers on how THEY would celebrate! Comment pleeeeaze!

Bises à tous!
